No Limit - Algonquin, IL
on 1/22/2012 5:33:05 PM
Just got wind of a new arcade that opened in the NW Suburbs of Chicago called No Limit. It is located at 2719 W. Algonquin Rd. Algonquin, IL 60102. They have a flat entrance fee [$20] and an inventory of around 60 games best as I can tell, ranging from newer to classic, arcade and pinball.

I won't be able to get up there to inventory it for a while, so I've reached out to them via their website to inform them about Aurcade so that they can add their location. And I'm posting here in the interim in case there are other members in the area that would want to venture out there to record their games.

Again:

Just got wind of a bar/arcade that will be opening in Wicker Park. It will contain 20 - 20 games and will have microbrews on tap. Looking forward to it!

A friend and I went over to No Limit last month. It's kind of small-ish. They bill themselves as a retro '80s arcade, which, it is, only to a small degree. At least half of the games are modern.

Things they need to work on:
- Bringing in some more core games....notable absences are Tapper, Q*Bert, Zookeeper, Dig Dug, Donkey Kong, several others...What was weird was that some of the games that were sorely missing in the arcade were in their SALE room.
- Just bring in more games, PERIOD, really...
- Many of the games are in serious need of repair. There are some display issues with Super Pac-Man. The graphics in Revolution X don't render properly. One of the Gauntlet II joysticks doesn't work. The joystick on the Venture machine doesn't work. The colors are washed out on the Ms. Pac-Man machine.

The good things:
- Friendly staff greets you at the door.
- They have a cool mini-museum in a glass case by the entrance with items such as Atari 800 cartridge boxes, some of the Coleco tabletop games (and a Nintendo version of the Donkey Kong tabletop game), Kodak Disc camera, etc.
- I noticed there was staff CONSTANTLY making the rounds, checking the machines to make sure they were working, etc.

I do think they have a lot of promise, though...if they get on top of those repair issues and bring in some more games -- especially retro -- it'd be a really awesome place to hang out.

The list shows they have three multicade machines there (a 300:1, a 60:1, and a Multi-Williams). Are any of the games you mentioned perhaps on them and you just didn't see it? Or are those multicade machines even there anymore? Zoo Keeper is kinda rare. I've never seen that game in my area.

Yes -- that was one thing I forgot to mention; they have several multicades...that kind of hit home when I went over to what I THOUGHT was a Pac-Man machine but instead saw Scramble...but yes, the multicades did have several classics, but it just didn't seem right. Case in point: playing Centipede on a multi-machine....with a joystick???

The way I see it, those machines are novelties for home use....too Skymall for a real arcade.

Yeah, I see your point, though I know of a "Multipede" that is out there that converts Millipede into Centipede and back.. Pretty affordable too, you just need to own a Millipede cabinet. To your point, do you think you would have the same awkwardness playing Centipede on a Missile Command multicade unit?

That's a shame there's a graphics problem with Revolution X. That is one of my all-time favorite games.

In the future, comments about opinions of arcades would best be suited in the arcades general discussion forums.
